School counsellors have a Master's in counselling psychology. Typically, a counsellor begins with a student in grade eight and follows him/her through to grade twelve. Students are encouraged to meet with their grade counsellor for support and assistance regarding school, emotional/social, and academic concerns.

Parents or guardians who have any concerns are encouraged to contact the counsellor via email to schedule an appointment.

Numeracy Assessment

As part of the updated graduation requirements, students in the 2018 Graduation Program (students graduating in June 2019 and beyond) will be required to write a provincial numeracy assessment. The first writing of this assessment was held at GISS in January for students finishing a mathematics 11 course in the first semester.

Pre-assessment activities are available for students to explore the assessment ahead of time, and activate their thinking, such as the sample assessment and collaborative-learning videos.
